Trent comes from a big family of swimmers. He has an older sister – Bianca and two younger brothers – Codie and Ridge. Trent’s parents, Fay and Rob, had all their children enrolled in learn-to-swim classes at a very young age. Slowly moving up the ranks, Trent started in his first proper squad at age 9, under John Dempsey at Lawnton Swim Club from there a short stint with Peter Diamond at Northern Districts Swim Club before moving to John Rodgers at Albany Creek Swim Club. Here Trent swam under John Rodgers (JR) for the next 11 years. JR took Trent from being an average age group swimmer who would struggle to make state finals to placing third at the 2008 Australian Swimming Championships (Olympic Trials) in the 1500m freestyle, just missing selection for the Olympic Team. Trent swam a time of 15.12.36, ranking him the 9th fastest all time Australian in that event.
At the end of 2008 is when Trent decided he wanted a new challenge, making the switch from pool swimming to open water swimming. With some great results in the first season which included: wins in the very prestigious “Tiburon Mile” in San Francisco and “King of the Sea” in Brazil, winning the double at the 2009 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships in the 5km and 10km events, winning the last World Cup race of the year in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates and to cap it all off Trent came home with a silver medal at the 2009 World Championships in the 25km event held in Rome, Italy – the first time he’d ever swam that distance.
The end of 2009 is when Trent and JR parted ways with JR taking a job offer overseas. Trent then moved clubs to train under Harley Connolly at Lawnton Swim Club. Harley was previously JR’s assistant.
With a very positive 2009 season, Trent was hoping for great things of 2010. Unfortunately it was not to be, with Trent contracting Ross River Fever which kept him out of action for the whole season.
2011 was always going to be a rebuilding year. With some very positive results especially towards the end of the year Trent is back to his best and can’t wait to start racing in 2012…
